Book III
A Tale of
Steppe and Sorrow
Humans are creatures of contrast. Our lives are
defined by antipodes. In suffering we find
strength, in gluttony debility. In riches there
is corruption, in poverty fidelity. In the meek
we see great courage, while in boasting there is
cowardice. So it is with all human
endeavours. We strive to possess joy in our
lives, yet it is not joy that guides us. True,
it can inspire us to things greater than
ourselves. But it is in our failings and our
sorrows that we are defined. In the fires of
pain and anguish our souls are refined and made
pure. Thus, there is some reason to admire the
temperate man who has mastered the antipodes of spirit.
