There are lots of reasons for being a priest.  Fanatacism isn't the 
only one.  Perhaps he did so because he wanted to make his parents 
proud.  Perhaps because he so wanted to meet Itmen and serve him, or 
even just to prove that he is worthy.  Either way, all of that is 
dashed in his heart now.
