AN: Okay an exceptionally long and brutal week is over. This is the next
part of my story. Enjoy.
MK Dust VI
Outside of the Meridian City station the sun was out and the clouds had
burned away. Emma squinted in the light. 'Too broke to get supplies,' Emma
thought to herself, 'gotta keep moving. Don’t slow down, debts are
waiting.' Meanwhile Sebastian was shuffling through his bag to find
something.
“What are you looking for?”
“My journal,” Sebastian said. He leaned against the post holding up the
awning over the entrance to the station, going shoulders deep into the
bags. “I know-got it!” He pulled out another leather bound book.
“Why do you need that?” Emma asked, raising a brow.
“Reasons.” Sebastian flipped the book open and made his way to one page
halfway through the book. “How long would it take us to reach our
destination on foot?”
“If we left right now?” Emma asked. “By night fall, if we’re lucky.”
“And by horse?” He asked. The otter shook her head.
“No one is going to rent us a mount to ride into No Man’s Land.” Emma said.
“Their horse could get killed, they don’t get anything if it dies. And I
ain’t buying a horse for one trip. We’ll walk.”
“That should be fun!” Sebastian said. “It’s like the stories from my
history books on Metamor Keep!” Emma sighed and walked into the street. “Oh
come on I--Watch out!” Emma’s head snapped up. She leapt back, tripping on
the curb and landing on her tail.
A loud horn honked as a twisted black metal contraption zoomed by, kicking
up a cloud of dust. The driver of the motorcar briefly glanced at the poor
otter before returning his attention to the road.
“Asshole!” Emma leapt to her feet. “That contraption is a menace! You
should feel ashamed!” She waved her fist but the motorcar was already long
gone. Sebastian whistled.
“That was a motorcar.” He said. “You rarely see those.”
“They should all be junked.” Emma growled. “How fast do you think he was
going?” Sebastian shrugged. “That’s right, too damn fast! No one was meant
to go faster than a horse unless they’re riding a dragon.”
“Is riding a dragon safer?”
“Let me ride one and I’ll tell you.” Emma said. “Let’s get going.”
Meridian City was alive with the sounds of people out and working. Farmers
were selling produce in the market squares while cabbies dominated the
roads, driving their clients through the streets. Store fronts were open
with bright windows showing off the wonders inside. Plastered on the side
of one massive building were dozens of posters. This caused Emma and
Sebastian to pause.
The posters were divided down the middle. On the left side was a smiling
happy man, bright and almost glowing. Above him was written “Citizens take
their Humanity!”. Then you saw the right side.
The same figure again, but this time with a noticeable change. His ears
were cut off, instead two lumps of scar tissue dotted the sides of his
head. On his cheeks were branded the letters S and L.
Seditious Lycan.
“Scoundrels get the Brand!” was written over his scarred head. Underneath
both was a picture of a glass bottle, with “Take your Humanity Lycans, it’s
the Law!” written there. Emma’s fur noticeably bristled. Sebastian took
this opportunity to speak up.
“Lycan means wolf.” Sebastian said. “Which is a misnomer when you consider
their are werelions, hyenas, and the Flatlands insurrection was lead by a
werehorse.”
“And he was one brutal bastard.” Emma grumbled. “Can’t really blame him
though. Fucking hell I would have been. Ever seen lycans shift as they run
across the battlefield?” Sebastian shook his head. “It’ll turn your blood
to ice.”
“Why’d you join the army,” Sebastian said, “If you didn’t like the war?”
“My dad did and they wanted Anthros. We died then they didn’t have to lose
valuable humans.” Emma said. “Done talking. Let’s get the fuck out of here.”
