AN: One thing I'm always curious about is how would we attempt to control
magic if it existed? Because we would try to control it. I also wonder how
it would be to travel with this individual. I suspect annoying.
MK Dust: V
“Good evening” She said, “I am sorry for disturbing your rest. We are
informing you that the dining car is now closed, it will reopen at six am
tomorrow morning with breakfast.” The woman was human, just over five feet
tall with brown hair pulled into a very tight bun.
Her uniform was a black and white porters suit and square hat and a skirt
that nearly dragged the ground. It was rather drab except for one thing on
her body. Encircling her neck was a shining silver ring. The ring bent with
the movements of her body, like a liquid. If you followed it with your eyes
you wouldn’t see where the ring was welded shut. It was a seamless silver
circle.
'Mage’s collar', Emma shook her head. 'Poor woman.'
When seeing something as embarrassing as a mage’s collar, proper decorum
dictated you didn’t look at it, acknowledge it and absolutely don’t do what
Sebastian did.
“You’ve got a mage’s collar! You must be a mage.” Sebastian leapt to his
feet, flourishing his cape. “May I touch the ring? I’ve never handled one
before.” The woman kept her smile pasted to her face but her eyes began to
twitch. Sebastian for his part failed to notice this.
Emma meanwhile noticed something about her companion. When he stood she
could see something written, or rather, sewn into the inside of his cape.
In blue thread were sewn the words in NOSCE TE IPSUM.
'What the hell is that?' The otter thought. 'What does that...why am I
worred about that? Get the moron back in his seat!'
“Sit down!” Emma grumbled.
“Does the collar let you use magic outside of self defense?” Sebastian
asked, “I was told that the mage’s collar only allows you to use magic in
self defense, but others said it also allows you to use magic for
non-lethal purposes.” All the while he spoke he kept making hand gestures,
light reflecting off the silver ring he wore on his hand with the cloth
wrapped around it.
“I can use my magic sir so long as I don’t hurt people.” The porter said.
By now her hands were balled into fists. “For example I couldn’t use it
right now.”
“Yes that’s fantastic,” Sebastian said. “So if you want to use magic to say
make a cup of tea, does it stop you from sparking a fire? Does it always
send out an alert to the Division of Magic Affairs? They’re in Marigund
City, have you ever been there? Their building is a big white cone! Did
they send people out to speak to you when you discovered you could use
magic? When was that incidentally?”
Emma groaned and willed herself to disappear.
“Have a nice day sir,” The woman said through grit teeth, “And please,
don’t be afraid to ask another porter if you have a question.” Before
Sebastian could further irritate this poor woman she was long gone.
“Amazing!” Sebastian repeated, watching her walk away. Emma for her part
had her face buried in her paws. 'Thank God no one can see this', she
thought. “The mage’s collar may be a foul abomination but it is an amazing
feat of engineering.” He jumped back into his seat, bouncing against the
cushion.
“Do you have to do that?” Emma glared at Sebastian. “That was humiliating
you turd.” Sebastian frowned.
“Did I do something to upset you?” He asked.
“No, of course not.” She said. “I love it when the guy who’s paying me is
insane. Nothing wrong with that, no sir.”
“I’m not insane.” Sebastian said.
“You were ranting over some woman with a silver collar. You humiliated her
and me.” Emma rubbed her muzzle. “I don’t know why you were acting like
that. I don’t care why. Please just shut up and let me sleep.” Sebastian
held up a finger but Emma ignored him and closed her eyes.
'What have I gotten myself into?' She shook her head, 'Ugh he’s crazy and
rich. Just get as much money as you can from him.' Emma pet her tail now,
trying to relax enough to sleep. Another bump confirmed sleep wouldn’t be
coming. 'I’m never going to get any sleep.' Emma twisted in her bench,
trying to find a comfortable position.
'It’s going to be a long night.' She yawned. 'Why did he say I was special?'
