August 4th, 708 CR.

The mockingbird Keeper sat by himself in the Deaf Mule. No Keeper shared
his table, and only a bare clenched foot-fistful of objects, consisting
of a small bell, a hammer, an ink pot, and a sheaf of parchment did.
Mockingbird musician would whistle a few notes of a song unknown to all
save him, and stomp his clawed and four-toed feet, or perhaps strike the
small bell with a hammer twice or thrice. Then he would nod his head
and, dipping the quill plucked from his own wing in fresh ink, write a
few more notes down on the parchment. Though this new song was without
clear words, he would write it down. Diamond Beak would practice it and,
when the time came, the wordless whistles and chirps would escape his
beak to captivate his audience.

"Choices must be made, though the prices extracted from us may be higher
than we would wish. Roads will be followed, sea lanes will be sailed.
And at journey's end, we must stand by the paths we have taken. And you,
my resolute song, you shall put steel in the spines of all who heed your
notes."
