Four merry minstrels played their way through Euper and Keep Town. They
consisted of a brown donkey named Baldwin with a black mane who wore red
and played drums, a yellow cat named Tybalt who wore blue and played the
mandolin, a brown dog named Curtise who wore green and played the fife, and
a white-feathered, red comb-and tailed rooster named Chanticleer (Chanti
for short) who wore sun-yellow and sang.
They’d played in the Companion Hearth Inn, they’d played at the Deaf Mule,
and they were now playing at the Jolly Collie, giving the crowd there some
evening entertainment. Misha walked in and noticed them.
"Where did you find that band?" Misha asked the bartender, a buxom woman
with blonde hair.
"They wandered in earlier looking for a job," she answered. "You like them
boss?"
Chanti was singing the main lines while the others sang the chorus. What
they sung sounded like a variation of “Se Canta”.
Chanti:
“There’s a bird outside my window
It sings all night long.
There’s a bird outside my window
It sings its night song.”
Chorus:
“He’s singing for his love who is far away
Across the mountains high
He’s singing for his love to return some day
Let the time be nigh!”
Chanti
“Let those mountains that are so high
Which keep his love from sight
Lay down before the sky
And let his love return safe this night!”
Chorus:
“He’s singing for his love who is far away
Across the mountains high
He’s singing for his love to return some day
Let the time be nigh!”
Chanti
“Lay down, o mountains, Rise up, o plains,
So he may see his love so dear!
Lay down, o mountains, Rise up, o plains
So his love may come near!”
Misha watched and waited to hear some more. They went through several
popular songs before they finished. There was a round of applause as they
took their seats. Getting up, Misha approached the four at their table.
“I really liked your performance. How would you four like to play at my
wedding?”
“It would be a pleasure my Lord?” Chanti started.
“Misha. Misha Brightleaf.”
The four looked at one another. Curtise looked faint. They all rose and
bowed. “But of course we’ll perform for you and your bride-to-be Lord
Brightleaf.”
