Hey all.
Feel free to pass this along to anyone who might be interested. At
this year's Midwest FurFest we're going to have a Plush Show. It's
scheduled for 7:30 Saturday, to be run as an adjunct to the Masquerade,
in keeping with the philosophy that plush and fursuits are two sides of
the same coin. The Masquerade will run at 7:00, the Plush Show at 7:30
on the same stage, in front of the same audience.
I'm planning categories for home made plush; dressed plush (store
bought or home made, that you've dressed yourself in whatever outfit you
think would be cute), and a third catch-all category for people to show
off their favourite plush that won't fit into either of the first two
categories. I'll be providing prizes myself, so don't expect anything
extravagent. There will be certificates of participation for everyone
who enters, though. I'm currently trying to license some nice art for
them.
At the moment I'm planning to use a format similar to a fursuit
contest, where each contestant comes out and shows his plushie to the
audience, and is judged by a panel. The judging method for the
home-made and dressed categories should be pretty obvious, but for the
third category I'm hoping people will be brave enough to do something
visual to entertain the crowd. Come out and tell a story about your
plush; act out a (very) brief play with two or three plushies; sing a
song with/about your plush, etc. Most of you have been to fur cons and
know the extravagently silly type of entertainment that goes over well
there. Think (e.g.) of someone making Meeko dance around while he sings
"The Good Ship Lollypop", and you'll have an idea where I hope this will
head. I can't really imagine that serious presentations such as are
used for fursuits would go over well with plush, but perhaps that's a
limit on my imagination. I'd be pleased to be proven wrong.
It's some months yet until the con (weekend before Thanksgiving), and
I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any ideas. My chief constraints
are that I can't spend much money (it's all coming out of my pocket for
this - I'm lucky to be getting the use of the main stage from the con,
without asking for funds to be spent), and it has to use the same stage,
sound and lighting configuration as the Masquerade (a fairly vanilla
setup, although I'm trying to get coloured floods for us), except for
perhaps a table and podium carried out.
I hope a lot of folx will participate in this. Speak up if you have
ideas :)
